activity

Teaching Film Activity:

It's a simple worksheet designed for post-viewing discussion, but it's also pretty informative and occasionally fun. Students are expected to answer these questions during/after viewing any given movie.

1. Underneath the plot, what do you think this movie is about?
2. What is your favourite scene in the movie?
3. What is your least-favourite scene in the movie?
4. Favourite shot?
5. How do you think this shot ties into what the director is saying with the movie?
6. Least favourite shot?
7. Name one thing you liked MOST about the movie? This could be ANYTHING from an actor to a hair-style.
8. Name one thing you liked LEAST.

  1. Jake,
I really like your work sheet idea. Giving the students a chance to put their opinions down is great, especially their likes and dislikes. I would maybe suggest adding a "why" to it being their favourite and least favourite.

  2. Jake, I like that these are engaging open-ended questions like the Critical Response Protocol that students learn to internalize and then use for responding to any of the films they view--they just begin to raise these questions automatically.

  3. there is a final question that I left out. and in retrospect, I'm not sure WHY I left it out.

The question: "What's your favourite line?"

It tends to get some REALLY fun answers, both in terms of informing what the movie is about and also in terms of just funny discussions.

  4. I like the simplicity of the worksheet and open ended questions. It helps the student think about the topic and gives them a little structure.
